PINE FOREST PINK! Racquets for Recovery "Taking a Hard Swing at Breast Cancer" November 7-9, 2008 The Pine Forest Ladies Tennis Association has a passion for pink because like many, we have friends and family on and off the court that battle breast cancer. The determination of these women has empowered us to do something in their honor and we have, raising $55,000 in three short years for the cause. The fourth annual Racquets for Recovery is an all doubles tournament - no singles - no mixed. Play begins on Friday, November 7 at 6 p.m., along with a complimentary courtside cookout by Trinity Catering where guests and the Pine Forest Community are welcomed. Saturday, November 8, tournament play continues with lunch courtesy of Jason's Deli. A registration fee of $30 includes these two meals as well as a tournament hat. Sports drinks, sodas and beer are also provided for the players. Finals will continue on Sunday, November 9th at 1 p.m. All participants are guaranteed two matches. A Celebration Party and Silent Auction will be held Saturday evening at the Pine Forest clubhouse. Participation in the tournament is not required to attend. An admission of $30 per person includes entertainment, food catered by Eclectic Chef, and a cash bar. Proceeds from the tournament and party go the American Cancer Society's "Quality of Life" programs which help local recovering breast cancer patients. For additional information contact Shirley Hunter at 572-7810 or shhunter@bellsouth.net. or Registration questions can be sent to Racquets2008@aol.com

YOU'VE BEEN FLOCKED! Pine Forest and neighboring communities will be invaded by Pink Flamingos! Of course, all donations are entirely voluntary. NO donations will be required in order to have your flamingos removed. If you are flocked, complete instructions will be included in this perfectly harmless pink and passionate fundraiser for local recovering breast cancer patients.

"Tennis With Love" A Fundraiser for Patti Romano. Patti Romano is a tennis player at Pine Forest Country Club, and has been an active tennis player from the Summerville area for many years. Unfortunately, she has recently been diagnosed with pancreatic and liver cancer which is incurable. She is self-employed in her computer business, and many know her as "Computer Patti". Because of her diagnosis, she will be unable to maintain her income for the months ahead while she is battling against this cancer. She has no living relatives, has never married, and has no children, no parents, and no siblings. Her tennis community is her family. Friends of Patti have supported her both emotionally and financially in the last couple of months since her diagnosis and need an extra helping hand to keep her comfortable until other resources become available. Her basic needs of financial assistance with rent, transportation, food, and medicine are needed desperately. Tickets for a 'Drawing' for a 2009 Family Circle Cup Championship Package for Two will be available at the Pine Forest Tennis Pro Shop. Tickets will be sold again at the CPTL Matches at Pine Forest Country Club on Friday, October 10th where a winner will be drawn. Donations for the prize are $5 per ticket or $20 for five tickets. The winner does not have to be present to win. Please find it in your heart to help in this desperate situation. Donations can also be made to the Patti Romano Fund and mailed to: 204 Prestwick Court, Summerville, SC 29483. Words of encouragement are welcome. Patti's address is PO Box 159, Summerville, SC 29484 or puterpatti@bellsouth.net The Friends of Patti thank you in advance for your kindness and generosity.

From the General Manager "Lounge Takes On New Look" The updated lounge area is nicely taking shape and will remain a work in progress for the months to come. As mentioned previously, the club has purchased four new Hi-definition flat screen televisions and the Sunday NFL ticket from Direct TV. We invite you and your guests to come support and cheer your favorite teams to victory. I would like to acknowledge our members Mr. Mark Bowers and Sheryl and Jim Peacher. Very simply put, their expertise, effort and donated time made the project possible. We are very appreciative of their assistance in making our club a more enjoyable place to spend our recreational hours. As we near the completion of the upgrades, we have re-designated the space to a Non-Smoking area. Thank you in advance for your continued support of the club. |

Fall is a busy time of year on the golf course, please check your calendar and join us when you can. New arrivals for fall are arriving regularly, stop by and check out the golf shop. We finally have the new Bridgestone B330RX and it promises to be a great ball for the skilled player who is not as long a hitter as he or she used to be. For questions or advice on your game don't hesitate to call or come by. We have wonderful weather on the way, hopefully all will take advantage and get out and enjoy Pine Forest CC whether it is playing golf, tennis or taking in a game in the remodeled lounge.

Hope everyone is out enjoying this great golfing weather! The ladies have been keeping busy. We held the "President's Cup" on Saturday, September 20th and everyone had a great time. Congratulations to our low gross winner, Marcia Kinney, and low net winner, Nancy Armstrong. Pine Forest served as host for September's Palmetto outing, which also was the yearly championship. We had a great turnout of 50 lady golfers and Pine Forest was well represented in the winners' circle, with several of our players taking winning spots in their respective flights. The course was in great shape and the staff did a terrific job with lunch. Thanks to Barbara Karns, our Palmetto representative, for her hard work in planning this event, and to all who helped out. Next on our agenda is the Fall Classic, to be held October 4th. We hope to have a great turnout for this 18 hole event, which will include lunch after play. The year is rapidly winding down, and the Nominating Committee will soon be presenting a slate of officers for 2009. Mark your calendars for December 11, which will be our Christmas dinner/party as well as the final meeting for the year when we will hand out awards and vote on new officers. One other note, remember our tee-times on league days will change from 9:00 to 10:00 beginning the first week of November. Now more than ever, keep 'em in the short stuff!
Couples Golf On Saturday, September 20th, we gathered together for our monthly outing, hosted by the Ockerman's and Arnold's. Our host planed a Caribbean theme, and everyone arrived in their best island attire. Everyone enjoyed the golf format, that included the men only being allowed to use a five iron one of the par three holes. This proved to be a challenge for most of our players. After golf, and prior to adjourning to the club house, we gathered at the pool side cabana for some wonderful melon balls and an island drink.... What an interesting beverage that was. Afterwards, we enjoyed an excellent Caribbean meal prepared by the F & B staff. Our next outing is scheduled for October 18th, hosted by the Glazers and Bees. More information on the format will be sent prior to the event. We will still have our normal 4:00 PM shotgun start, and ask that everyone arrive at the club house no later than 3:45 PM. The sign-up sheet is in the club house for those who have not already signed-up. Please keep December 13th open for our yearly Christmas party. More details will be provided in November.

Maintenance
Pleasant daytime temperatures are upon us. That can only mean one thing....time to over-seed. Our cool season preparation will be as it has in the past with the exception of seeding the fairways. We have decided that taking a season off can only prove beneficial. More exact, it will provide us with the opportunity to clean up more of the winter weeds and allow us to better prepare for a strong stand of Bermuda this coming Spring. This should also allow the Bermuda the opportunity to come out of dormancy when soil temps warm. In short we should green-up earlier in the season. Our normal over-seeding practices will be followed on our tees, collars and greens. Since we are not seeding the fairways there will not be a 14 day period of cart restrictions. Walkers with push carts are asked to leave there carts on areas not over-seeded.The rye seed will stick to the tires on push carts and make for unsightly trails as well as thin the rate at which the tees, collars and approaches are seeded . Although displacement of seed occurs at a higher rate when the turf is moist, it also occurs when it is dry. It is for that reason that we will be asking push cart operators to exercise caution in respect to where they roll their carts. My staff and I will be over-seeding during the drier conditions of late mornings and early afternoons from October14th-17th. I would like to thank those of you who have acknowledged my staff for the conditions of the course. They never get tired of hearing how good they are, imagine that. I would also like to extend a special thank you to Sheryl Peacher. Her efforts as a volunteer are constantly improving the clubhouse area. If you have any questions or comments regarding the golf course please feel free to stop me on the course or call me at 821-2109. Hit'em good. Butch.

Team Trivia TEAM TRIVIA: Will be held at the Club on Thursday October 9th and the 30th starting at 7 PM. We would normally have it on the 23rd but we were asked if we could re-schedule due to some other activity by other members on that date and we agreed.
WE THE JURY... A new adult game will be introduced on October 16th at the Club starting at 6:45 PM. There will be light Hors d'oeuvres at a nominal price and some special discounted drinks. Depending upon how well it is received will determine future play dates. Like Team Trivia, teams will consist of at least 10 jurors deliberating on court cases that Judge I. M. Harshly will summarize. Each Jury will then deliberate, rendering their verdict FOR or AGAINST. Jury Teams will receive prizes for highest scores, but the club has not yet decided the number and amount. So far 3 teams have been formed by way of the flyer distributed so it is important you begin organizing now! You can contact Thom Nolan at 851 8880, ext. 203 or e-mail him at thomnolansc@aol.com if you need help organizing. Come on down, join the fun of playing a game where your vote could make a difference. Mark it down in your address book: OCTOBER 16TH, 6:45 PM.
